Policy Statement

Durham Technical Community College offers twelve (12) paid holidays to 12-month employees and ten (10) paid holidays to 9-month employees each year.

Procedure

In accordance with State Board of Community Colleges (SBCC) code, full-time Durham Technical Community College (Durham Tech) employees who are eligible to earn annual leave pursuant to College policy receive pay for a maximum of twelve (12) holidays per calendar year. Full-time employees who work between thirty (30) and thirty-nine (39) hours per week and are eligible to earn annual leave pursuant to College policy receive pay for holidays on a pro-rata basis.

Twelve-month employees receive pay for twelve (12) holidays per calendar year. Nine-month employees receive pay for ten (10) holidays per calendar year since two (2) holidays fall outside of their academic year work schedule.

Durham Tech only pays holiday leave to eligible employees who are one of the following:

  • In pay status through the day on which the holiday is scheduled; or

  • On a leave of absence without pay, but were in pay status for half or more of the workdays in the month.

In accordance with SBCC code, Durham Tech’s Board of Trustees shall determine when holidays are scheduled on the academic calendar and may require employees to take annual leave, special leave granted by the North Carolina General Assembly, accumulated compensatory leave, or leave without pay on days other than holidays when classes are not scheduled to be in session.

Holidays occurring on a weekend or non-workday will be observed on the Friday prior or on the subsequent Monday.

Durham Tech observes the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day (January 1)

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday (third Monday in January)

  • Good Friday (March or April)

  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May; 12-month employees only)

  • Independence Day (July 4; 12-month employees only)

  • Labor Day (first Monday in September)

  • Day before Thanksgiving Day (fourth Wednesday in November; 9-month employees only)

  • Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November)

  • Day after Thanksgiving Day (fourth Friday in November)

  • Christmas Eve (December 24)

  • Christmas Day (December 25)

  • Day after Christmas Day (December 26; 12-month employees only)

  • Floating Holiday (*effective January 1, 2019)

Definitions

Eligible Employees – For the purposes of this policy, eligible employees are permanent full-time employees.

Floating Holiday – The College offers eligible employees one day of floating holiday leave per calendar year. Employees earn floating holiday leave as follows:

  • Employees who work forty (40) hours per week earn eight (8) hours per calendar year.

  • Employees working fewer than eight (8) hours per day earn leave prorated based on their normal work hours. For example, an employee working thirty (30) hours per week earns six (6) hours of floating holiday leave and an employee working thirty-five (35) hours per week earns seven (7) hours.

These leave hours are to be used at the employee’s discretion (with prior supervisory approval). Floating holiday leave must be requested and reported via the employee leave system.

Full-Time Employees – College employees who work at least thirty (30) hours per week. Full-time employees who work thirty (30) to thirty-nine (39) hours per week earn leave on a prorated basis; all other benefits are the same for all full-time employees regardless of time worked each week.

In Pay Status – Employees who are active are considered “in pay status”.
